To say there is good walleye fishing in northwestern Ontario would be a gross understatement! It is fantastic. The walleye, or pickerel as it is often called in Canada, although, not famous as a fighting fish, is often a challenge to catch, and is definably known for quality eating. I had the pleasure of flying high over northwestern Ontario the other day. The shear number of lakes is just incredible. All of these lakes are a reasonably short flight from our base at West Caribou Air service, and most offer excellent walleye fishing.
West Caribou Air Service is located right in the heart of this quality walleye fishing, and is easily reached via Hwy 599 just north of the Village of Savant Lake. West Caribou Air Service can fly you into one of the lakes where we have boats cached and motors available. These lakes are chosen for their quality and quantity of walleye, and also for the sustainability of the walleye fishing and their pristine wilderness appeal. This is all done at a very reasonable cost per person (see our $179.00 - $299.00 special) and will make the difference between a so-so walleye-fishing trip and a wonderful wilderness experience. Allowing us to fly you to prime and remote walleye fishing will cut down dramatically on the equipment you need to haul. If you desire a little more comfort while walleye fishing, we can also offer outpost camp and full service lodge fishing in the area. Again see our outposts, cabins, and lodges for package deals.
For those considering a walleye-fishing trip for the first time, a few tips may be in order. Light tackle, including a sensitive light to medium action rod, a reel with a good quality drag and one of the relatively new non-stretch lines in 6lb test will serve you well. Early in the season, a 1/4 oz. jig tipped with a live minnow is all you need. Later, in the hot summer months, going a little lighter will guarantee excellent walleye fishing. At this time of year we recommend 1/8th oz. jigs with a 1-inch twister tail and a leach. My friend and business partner, Clayton Downtown will also swear by an Earie Dearie tipped with a minnow or leach, and slowly trolled behind the boat until walleye are located. A simple, portable depth finder is also worth it's weight in gold.
The management and staff at West Caribou have spent many years in pursuit of excellent walleye fishing, and feel well qualified to advise and make suggestion to ensue you a memorable walleye fishing trip. For newcomers to the wilderness, we recommend the rental of one of our satellite phones or even the services of a guide to ensure peace of mind while in the bush.
